The Politics of Wedding Gown Color

Most brides couldn’t consider wearing another color that was not white. Cream, beige or winter winter is not really a risk taking color beyond the traditional white. While the connection between white and virginity is dying a slow and painful death in bridal culture that’s been reduced to people making passive side remarks, “looks like she decided to wear white after all.” The decision to wear white was not always influenced by just religion or tradition, culture and consumerism also had a big hand in shaping bride’s decisions. Here’s one poem that helped sway bride’s choices in wedding gown color by implying if you didn’t chose wisely it could in fact affect the future of your marriage.

“Married in White, you have chosen right,

Married in Blue, your love will always be true,

Married in Pearl, you will live in a whirl,

Married in Brown, you’ll never live in town,

Married in Red, you will wish yourself dead,

Married in Yellow, ashamed of your fellow,

Married in Green, ashamed to be seen,

Married in Pink, your spirit will sink,

Married in Grey, you will go far away,

Married in Black, you will wish yourself back.”
